Sherman Aeronautics is looking for hands-on builders who want to help rapidly prototype the next generation of tethered aircraft. Current openings are contract roles supporting airframe design, manufacturing, and prototype assembly in San Bernardino. These roles are contingent on acceptance into the DARPA SBIR for Commercialization of High Lift Aircraft.

Airframe Designer and CAD Modeler

Contract position · Hybrid · San Bernardino, CA

$30-$50/hr

This role focuses on rapid prototyping of aircraft, from airframe concepts and structural analysis through production-ready drawings, 3D-print files, laser-cut files, and BOM-driven part ordering.

Responsibilities

  • Design airframe structures for rapidly iterated prototype aircraft.
  • Perform structural calculations and analysis to guide design decisions.
  • Create detailed drawings, CAD models, and manufacturing-ready files.
  • Prepare files for 3D printing and laser cutting.
  • Generate and maintain BOMs, then coordinate ordering of required parts.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience designing and building airframes.
  • 4-6 years of CAD experience, with proficiency in SolidWorks or preferably NX.
  • Degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with structural analysis and FEA is preferred.
  • Able to assist with manufacturing and prototyping efforts in person in San Bernardino, CA.

Manufacturing Technician

Contract position · In person · San Bernardino, CA

$20-$35/hr

This role supports the rapid build and assembly of prototype aircraft, with an emphasis on composites manufacturing, hands-on fabrication, and practical shop execution.

Responsibilities

  • Build and assemble prototype aircraft structures and components.
  • Support composites manufacturing, including layups and related fabrication work.
  • Use basic machinery, hand tools, and shop equipment safely and effectively.
  • Assist with prototype iteration, fit checks, finishing, and assembly details.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience with composites manufacturing and layups.
  • Comfortable using basic machinery and tools.
  • Able to work in person in San Bernardino, CA.
  • Experience in aircraft maintenance or manufacturing is preferred.
  • Experience in manufacturing shops, CNC machining, laser cutters, or 3D printers is preferred.
